What does your power outfit consist of?
For me as a female entrepreneur, I feel like I have to get up everyday and put on my armor to go out and fight the fight, and for me, that armor is a button up shirt. It’s the only thing that makes me feel feminine and strong at the same time. So ten years ago, I launched Frank & Eileen with one button up shirt called the Barry and I wore it every single day for 5 years, until we launched the Eileen, and I started wearing Barry and Eileen. And now, 10 years later, I’ve worn a button up shirt pretty much every single day.
What’s your go-to cup of tea in the morning?
There’s nothing better than a good cup of Irish tea. In Ireland, the entire social fabric is made up of having a cup of tea. So everywhere you go, someone comes up to you and says, “come on in for a wee cup of tea.” It could be 11 at night, 7 in the morning, it doesn’t matter, you’re going to be invited for a wee cup of tea. So I try to recreate it in California, we import Barry’s tea from Ireland, it’s a good strong cup of Irish breakfast tea, and we try to have entire tea service everyday at the office.
Name one woman who inspires you?
When I was young, most of the big name designer were men, like Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and then came along Donna Karan in 1985, and introduced the concept of 7 easy pieces and changed the way women shop and dress for the rest of history. This concept was not for ladies who lunch, this was for women who mean business, were building their careers, and now 35 years later, this still influences the way that everybody designs collections for today’s modern woman.
What does your power outfit consist of?
I’m a true uniform dresser and you can find me in a button-up shirt, twill pants, and beautifully constructed shoes pretty much every day of the week.
What is your secret pleasure Instagram account to follow?
Any female founder who shares an honest snapshot of her life and gives you a peek into what it’s really like to run a business and build a life at the same time (it’s no joke!). @sarablakely of Spanx, @jenrubio of Away, @amynelson of The Riveter … I can’t get enough.
